Thus have I heard. At one time the Buddha was dwelling on the summit of Mount Laṅkā by the shore of the southern sea, adorned with various jewelled flowers. He was together with a great bhikṣu saṅgha and an assembly of great bodhisattvas, who had come from various different buddha-kṣetras. These bodhisattva-mahāsattvas had the power of sovereign mastery in immeasurable samādhis and sport with supernormal powers. Bodhisattva-mahāsattva Mahāmati was their leader; all the Buddhas consecrated his head with their hands. He well understood the meaning of the realms appearing from one's own mind; with immeasurable gates of deliverance, he universally manifested in accordance with the classes of various sentient beings and their various minds and forms; and he thoroughly and completely penetrated the five dharmas, svabhāva, consciousness, and the two kinds of selflessness.
