This explains the reason why the real and the false perish or do not perish. It was previously stated that the evolving consciousnesses perish while the storehouse consciousness does not perish, which has already shown that they are neither different nor not different; yet fearing that Mahāmati had not grasped this profound meaning, [the Buddha] again declared: "The true nature does not perish; only the karmic marks perish." For the real is an unchanging nature, originally free from arising and perishing; karma is the illusory mark of ignorance, and therefore has arising and perishing. Since one has turned away from the false and returned to the real, the false perishes while the real does not perish. If the real were to perish, how would that differ from the annihilationist doctrines of the tīrthikas? "Doctrines" refers to frivolous discourse (prapañca)—that is, the untrue verbal teachings of the tīrthikas.
