"Mahāmati, those tīrthikas make such an assertion, saying that when grasped realms perish, the stream of consciousness also perishes. If the stream of consciousness were to perish, the beginningless stream would be severed. Mahāmati, the tīrthikas say that the cause of the stream's arising is not generated from the concurrence of the eye, consciousness, form, and light, but has another cause. Mahāmati, as for that cause, they say: 'Either the Pradhāna, or the Puruṣa, or Īśvara, or time, or subtle atoms.'"
