The Hīnayāna dreads saṃsāra and joyfully seeks nirvāṇa, unaware that the differentiated lakṣaṇas of saṃsāra and nirvāṇa are all vikalpa, lacking true nature. This Hīnayāna eye of wisdom sees the future faculties and dusts cease and extinguish, and takes this to be nirvāṇa. How could this truly be the realm tended toward by pratyātmāryajñāna? Nor is it the nirvāṇa transformed from the ālayavijñāna. Saying that foolish common mortals speak of the three vehicles means: because the Mahāyāna Dharma that saṃsāra is itself nirvāṇa is not known to them, the true emptiness nirvāṇa of the Hīnayāna is spoken for them. The scope of mind having nothing whatsoever is precisely true emptiness. Yet, not knowing that the wondrous mind of nirvāṇa of all Buddhas of the three periods is the manifestation of their own mind and nothing else, they falsely construct dharmas outside the mind, give rise to delusion, create karma, and revolve in saṃsāra.
