"Those who are separately without interval": this refers to the Śrāvakas who cling to characteristics, who do not differ from the tīrthikas yet are said to be "without interval." They grasp at mutually distinct dharmas, such as the views of a self and a person, as being nirvāṇa, unaware that these are the root of birth and death, perversely regarding them as awakening and grasping realization. Moreover, there is another kind who grasp that all dharmas exist entirely due to a creator, reckoning as cause that which is not a cause, and viewing all natures as being nirvāṇa. They resemble the Śrāvakas who delight in cessation and practice the path, yet as for liberation through the selflessness of dharmas, it is truly not their lot. Though called sons of the Buddha, they are actually tīrthikas; hence they are called "tīrthikas without interval." Although they wish to escape the three realms, they are unable to escape; hence it says "an awakening that does not transcend, yet [claims] transcendence." It also exhorts learners that they should transform those evil views and proceed toward the Tathāgata-gotra.
