"Pratyekabuddhas" are those who receive teaching from a Buddha, contemplate the twelve links of dependent origination, and awaken to the principle of true reality; hence they are named "pratyekabuddha." They are also called "solitary awakened ones," who appear in an age without a Buddha and, observing conditions, awaken on their own. As for "the uninterrupted nature of discrete conditions," when they hear the teaching on the cycle of cause and effect in the twelve links of dependent origination and awaken to non-arising, it accords with their wish, and sorrow and deep feeling intermingle so that they shed tears. The phrase "not close to them," and so forth, means that they delight in solitary, good tranquility and cultivate the practice of detachment, unable to attach to any characteristic whatsoever; or at times, when bodily supernatural powers and transformations are taught to them—either separating one body into many, or uniting many bodies into one—upon hearing such a teaching their minds enter into it. When a bodhisattva knows that lineage of the Pratyekabuddha, he should expound this teaching of the Pratyekabuddha vehicle for them.
