Mahāmati addressed the Buddha, saying: "World-Honoured One, how is it that among these, there is ultimately no attaining of parinirvāṇa?" The Buddha told Mahāmati: "The bodhisattva-icchantika, knowing that all good dharmas are originally in parinirvāṇa, ultimately does not attain parinirvāṇa; yet they are not an icchantika who has abandoned all roots of goodness. Mahāmati, as for the icchantika who abandons all roots of goodness, moreover, through the supernatural power of the Tathāgata, at times their roots of goodness arise. Why is this? Because the Tathāgata does not abandon any sentient beings. For this reason, the bodhisattva-icchantika does not attain parinirvāṇa."
