2.212

The "three fetters" are the afflictions of view. Because of severing these views, one leaves behind greed, anger, and delusion. These three are the afflictions of thought within the afflictions of view. The "two errors": view of the body is the root, and the various fetters are the branches; if the root is not eliminated, how can the branches be extinguished? There are many kinds of greed; by specially mentioning craving and delighting in women, it cites the gravest among them. A person of the first fruit attains the superior bliss of samādhi and is able to sever this desire. Although they are free from existence, they are still attached to emptiness; hence it says: "the greed to proceed toward nirvāṇa is not severed."
