2.214

This clarifies the characteristic of the second fruit. It means discerning and understanding the discrimination of the form-characteristics of the five aggregates; it is not like the first fruit's cultivation of the contemplation of the four practices, and hence it is called "sudden." The "characteristics of arising" are the fetters; the "characteristics of views" are discrimination. When these two do not arise, they rely solely on uncontaminated wisdom to further cultivate dhyāna meditation, and thus see well the characteristics of the realms of dhyāna. They proceed to sever the afflictions of thought of the desire realm up to exhausting six grades, with only one rebirth remaining; hence it says: "they come to this world just once." "Making an end of suffering" means departing from life and death among humans. "Attaining nirvāṇa" means realizing the second fruit.
