This clarifies whether the svalakṣaṇa of the five skandhas is numbered or not numbered. To speak of number: because form and non-form each have four numbers, it therefore says, "those four skandhas are not form." It also says that form consists of the distinct lakṣaṇas of the four great elements and derived forms; thus the four great elements are distinct yet collectively called "form," and form also has four. Next, to say that they have no number: both the form realm and the formless realm are without number. Showing this provisionally in terms of the formless realm, it therefore says, "it is not that the non-material has the number four, just like space," directly stating that the four formless skandhas fundamentally do not have four. For example, space transcends the lakṣaṇa of number, yet through vikalpa and discrimination one says that space is one. The skandhas are also like this, free from all lakṣaṇas of number and the catuṣkoṭi of existence, nonexistence, and so on. Calculating that there is a lakṣaṇa of number is what ordinary people say, not the noble ones—as in saying "The Buddha's body is unconditioned, and does not fall into numbers."
