"Furthermore, Mahāmati, I shall speak of the svalakṣaṇa of the skandhas. What is the svalakṣaṇa of the skandhas? It refers to the five skandhas. What are the five? They are form, sensation, perception, formations, and consciousness. Those four skandhas are not form: they are sensation, perception, formations, and consciousness. Mahāmati, form consists of the distinct lakṣaṇas of the four great elements and derived forms. Mahāmati, it is not that the non-material has the number four, just like space. For example, space transcends the lakṣaṇa of number and is free from number, yet through vikalpa one says 'one space.' Mahāmati, likewise the skandhas transcend the lakṣaṇa of number, are free from number, free from nature and non-nature, and free from the catuṣkoṭi. The lakṣaṇa of number is the talk of foolish common people, not of the noble ones."
