"World-Honoured One, by what causes and conditions is there a mind-made body?" The Buddha told Mahāmati: "The mind-made body is, for example, like the travel of thought: rapid and unimpeded, hence it is named 'mind-made.' For example, just as thought travels without impediment through stone walls, reaching to immeasurable yojanas in that other direction, because of what was previously seen and held in memory without forgetting, flowing continuously from one's own mind without interruption, it arises without impediment to the body. Mahāmati, such a mind-made body is attained all at once. The mind-made body of a bodhisattva-mahāsattva, through the power of the illusion-like samādhi, with sovereign supernatural powers, adorned with wondrous signs, a noble class of body, arises all at once, just like mind-made without impediment; according to the realm of one's past vows held in memory, in order to mature sentient beings, one attains the skilful joy of noble knowledge realised within oneself."
