2.37

"The cause of future existence" means that the cause which is performed—being dharmas produced by sense faculties and dust—is a present cause, capable of inviting a future fruit. "The cause of continuity" means that grasping at faculties and dust forms good and evil karma, which continues to produce the seeds of subsequent aggregates, so that the fruit again becomes a cause. "The cause of characteristics" means producing characteristics of uninterrupted good and evil karma, with cause and effect continuing without interruption. "The efficient cause" means producing a cause upon a cause, like a wheel-turning king who, having already obtained supreme retribution, further creates supreme causes; this is called 'predominant.' "The revealing cause" means that wherever falsely imagined affairs arise, they must have a cause, manifesting the objective characteristics of what can act and what is acted upon, just as a lamp illuminating objects makes them clearly visible. "The dependent cause" means that when false imagination ceases, it acts again, and when it acts, it ceases again; if continuous thought is severed, then an unfalsely imagined nature arises; using the false to depend upon the non-false—this is the dependent cause.
