At that time, the Bodhisattva Mahāsattva Mahāmati said to the Buddha: "World-Honoured One, the World-Honoured One's sūtras say: 'The tathāgatagarbha is pure in its svabhāva, transformed with the thirty-two marks entering into the bodies of all sentient beings, like a jewel of great price wrapped in soiled garments. The tathāgatagarbha's eternal and unchanging nature is also like this; yet it is wrapped in the soiled garments of the skandhas, dhātus, and āyatanas, defiled by lust, anger, delusion, and the afflictions of unreal vikalpa, as expounded by all the Buddhas.' How is it that the World-Honoured One, like the tīrthikas who speak of a self, says there is a tathāgatagarbha? World-Honoured One, the tīrthikas also teach that there is a permanent creator, free from the guṇas, all-pervading and indestructible. World-Honoured One, they speak of a self."
