The Buddha told Mahāmati: "Listen attentively! Listen attentively, and think carefully upon it; I shall explain it for you." Mahāmati addressed the Buddha, saying: "Excellent, World-Honoured One! I accept your teaching respectfully." The Buddha told Mahāmati: "There are four kinds of marks of discriminatory speech: namely, speech of marks, speech of dreams, speech clinging to past discriminations, and speech of beginningless discrimination. Speech of marks arises from clinging to the form-marks of one's own discrimination. Speech of dreams arises following recollections of realms previously experienced, and from the realm after awakening being devoid of inherent nature. Speech clinging to past discriminations arises following recollections of deeds done by former enemies. Speech of beginningless discrimination arises from the vāsanā of one's own seeds of clinging to beginningless falsehoods and errors. These are called the four kinds of marks of discriminatory speech."
