The Buddha told Mahāmati: "Excellent! Excellent! That you are able to ask me about such meaning will bring much peace and happiness, much benefit, out of compassion for all devas and humans." The Buddha told Mahāmati: "Listen attentively! Listen attentively, and think carefully upon it; I shall analyse and explain it for you." Mahāmati addressed the Buddha, saying: "Excellent, World-Honoured One! I accept your teaching respectfully." The Buddha told Mahāmati: "Ignorant and foolish worldlings, not knowing the measure of mind, grasp at internal and external natures, and, relying upon the habitual causes (vāsanahetu) of svabhāva regarding identity and difference, both and neither, existence, nonexistence, neither existence nor nonexistence, permanence and impermanence, produce clingings and discriminations."
