The Buddha told Mahāmati: "Good indeed! Good indeed! Listen attentively! Listen attentively, and think upon it well; I shall explain it for you." Mahāmati said to the Buddha: "Indeed, I receive your teaching." The Buddha told Mahāmati: "The Tathāgatas of the three times possess two kinds of mastery of the Dharma: the mastery of teaching and the mastery of one's own tenet. As for the mastery of teaching, it means that in accordance with what is appropriate to the minds of sentient beings, one preaches for them sūtras of diverse complete provisions; this is called the mastery of teaching. As for the mastery of one's own tenet, it means that practitioners are free from the diverse false discriminations appearing from their own mind; they do not fall into categories of identity and difference, or both and neither; they transcend all citta, manas, and manovijñāna; they reach the noble realm of self-realization; they are free from the marks of views produced by causes; and they cannot be known by any tīrthikas, śrāvakas, pratyekabuddhas, or those who fall into the two extremes. This I call the dharma of the mastery of one's own tenet. Mahāmati, these are called the characteristics of the mastery of one's own tenet and the mastery of teaching. You and the other bodhisattva-mahāsattvas should cultivate and learn them."
