Having explained the characteristics of existence and nonexistence in response to Mahāmati's request, the Tathāgata then asks which among these two is a destroyer of the Buddha Dharma. Mahāmati then answers that one who first grasps the nature of the three poisons as existent and later conceptualizes them as nonexistent is the meaning of a destroyer. The Buddha approves his statement, and then says that not only is conceptualizing nonexistence a destroyer, but they also destroy the two vehicles and the Buddha. For they claim that the Buddha and the two vehicles also originally grasped the three poisons as existent, and later eliminated the three poisons into nonexistence to attain the holy fruit; hence it is said, "they are also destroyers." From "why is that" downward means that the sages thoroughly realize that all internal and external dharmas are ungraspable, and also realize that the nature of afflictions is originally free from the catuṣkoṭi of identity and difference and the like; what destruction could there be?
