At that time, the Bodhisattva Mahāmati said to the Buddha: “World-Honoured One! Please explain for us the characteristics of unreal vikalpa. How does unreal vikalpa arise? What dharmas are called unreal vikalpa? In what dharmas does unreal vikalpa occur?” The Buddha told Mahāmati: “Excellent! Excellent! That you can ask the Tathāgata about such an issue brings great benefit and great peace and joy, out of compassion for all devas and humans in the world. Listen closely! Listen closely! Think on it well; I will explain it for you.” Mahāmati said to the Buddha: “Excellent, World-Honoured One! I reverently accept the instruction.” The Buddha told Mahāmati: “Through attachment to various objects and various unreal conceptual thoughts, vikalpa arises. Mahāmati, attaching to grāhya and grāhaka, not knowing that it is cittadṛśyamātra, and falling into the views of existence and nonexistence, one increases tīrthika views. Through the vāsanā of vikalpa attaching to various external objects, the vikalpa of the mind and mental factors attaches to self and what belongs to self, and arises.”
