The Buddha told Mahāmati: “It is not that of vikalpa, one arises and one does not arise. Why is this? Because when the vikalpa of existence and nonexistence does not arise, external appearances of nature and non-nature are realized as cittadṛśyamātra, and vikalpa does not arise. Mahāmati, it is because of the various conceptual characteristics in the minds of other foolish persons that, with activities appearing before them, various attachments to the nature and characteristics of vikalpa arise. How can the foolish be freed from the view of attaching to self and what belongs to self, be freed from the fault of causal conditions of agent and action, awaken to the measure of their own conceptual mind, transform body and mind, ultimately understand the Tathāgata's realm of self-realization on all stages, and be free from the vikalpa of the five dharmas, svabhāva, things, and views? For this reason, I say that vikalpa arises from attachment to various unreal objects; when they know the true reality, they attain liberation from the various conceptual thoughts of their own minds.”
