Then the Bodhisattva Mahāmati again addressed the Buddha, saying: "World-Honoured One! As the World-Honoured One said, 'The sūtras embrace neither arising nor cessation.' And the World-Honoured One said, 'Neither arising nor cessation is an alternative name for the Tathāgata.' Why does the World-Honoured One speak of neither arising nor cessation because of naturelessness, or is it an alternative name for the Tathāgata?" The Buddha told Mahāmati: "I say that all dharmas neither arise nor cease, and the category of existence and nonexistence does not manifest." Mahāmati addressed the Buddha, saying: "World-Honoured One! If all dharmas do not arise, then embracing dharmas is unobtainable, because all dharmas do not arise. If there is a dharma within names, I pray you explain it for me." The Buddha told Mahāmati: "Excellent, excellent! Listen attentively! Listen attentively and ponder it well; I shall explain and analyze it for you." Mahāmati addressed the Buddha, saying: "Yes, indeed; I receive your instruction." The Buddha told Mahāmati: "I say that the Tathāgata is not natureless, nor does neither arising nor cessation embrace all dharmas, nor is it dependent on conditions that it neither arises nor ceases, nor is it meaningless."
