The Buddha told Mahāmati: 'Listen attentively! Listen attentively and reflect well upon it; I will explain it for you.' Mahāmati addressed the Buddha, saying: 'Excellent, World-Honoured One! I reverently receive your instruction.' The Buddha told Mahāmati: '[The prophecy] is spoken for the sake of nirvāṇa without remainder, in order to attract and advance those who practice the bodhisattva path. When practitioners of the bodhisattva path in this and other worlds take pleasure in the nirvāṇa of the śrāvaka vehicle, it is to make them leave the śrāvaka vehicle and advance toward the Mahāyāna. It is an Emanation Buddha who confers the prophecy upon the śrāvakas, not the Dharma Buddha. Mahāmati! For this reason, the prophecy [states that] the śrāvakas do not differ from bodhisattvas. Mahāmati! That they do not differ means that śrāvakas, pratyekabuddhas, and the Buddhas and Tathāgatas have severed the hindrance of afflictions and share the single taste of liberation, not that they have severed the hindrance of the knowable. Mahāmati! As for the hindrance of the knowable, it is seen through the selflessness of dharmas and is exquisitely pure. As for the hindrance of afflictions, it is severed through the prior habituation of seeing the selflessness of persons. When the seven consciousnesses cease, there is liberation from the hindrance of dharmas; when the vāsanās of the storehouse consciousness cease, there is ultimate purity.'
