The Tathāgata was teaching the Dharma in the palace of the king of yakṣas. The yakṣas were thinking that the time to eat was approaching, and they ate nothing but meat. Because Mahāmati wished to cause the yakṣas to give rise to a mind of compassion, he accordingly requested the Tathāgata to explain the guilt and merit of eating meat and not eating meat.
