After Bodhisattva Mahāmati had asked in verse, he again addressed the Buddha, saying: "We only pray that the World-Honoured One will explain for us the merits and faults of eating and not eating meat. I and the bodhisattvas, in the present and the future, shall explain the Dharma with discrimination for various sentient beings who desire to eat meat, so as to cause those sentient beings to turn toward one another with minds of compassion. Having attained a mind of compassion, they will each be pure and clear in their stage of dwelling and swiftly attain ultimate unsurpassed bodhi. Even after śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas have ceased in their own stages, they too will quickly achieve unsurpassed bodhi. Even those tīrthikas of evil and false treatises, with their false views and inverted clingings to annihilation and permanence, still have prohibitive rules that forbid eating meat; how much less should the Tathāgata, who protects the world and has perfected the true Dharma, eat meat?"
