"Mahāmati! If anyone says that the Tathāgata teaches dharmas that fall into letters, this is false speech, because the Dharma is free from letters. For this reason, Mahāmati, we Buddhas and bodhisattvas have not spoken a single word, nor answered with a single word. Why is this? Because the Dharma is free from letters, though it is not without expounding meaning to benefit [beings]. Speech is due to the vikalpa of sentient beings. Mahāmati, if all dharmas were not spoken of, the doctrine of the teachings would be destroyed. If the doctrine of the teachings were destroyed, there would be no Buddhas, bodhisattvas, pratyekabuddhas, or śrāvakas. If there were none, who would speak, and for whom?"
