4.41

"Mahāmati, it is like pointing at an object with a finger for a fool: the fool looks at the finger and fails to grasp the real meaning. In this way, fools follow the finger of speech, grasping and clinging to it to the very end without letting go, and ultimately are unable to attain the primary real meaning that is free from the finger of speech. Mahāmati, it is like an infant who should eat cooked food and should not eat raw food; if it eats raw food, it will be driven mad, because it does not know the gradual expedient means of cooking. Mahāmati, in this way, unarisen and unceasing, if one does not cultivate expedient means, it will be unwholesome. Therefore, you should skillfully cultivate expedient means and not follow speech, like the tip of this finger."
