4.44

The meaning of the real meaning is free from the mark of speech; hence it is said to be 'subtle and quiescent.' When this principle is manifested, it is the fruition of nirvāṇa; before it is manifested, it is called the cause. If one clings to speech and does not comprehend the real meaning, then it conjoins with vikalpa to become the cause of saṃsāra. Yet this real meaning must be attained through the wisdom gained from hearing. Furthermore, 'skilled in the meaning' means not merely wide learning, but essentially forgetting words to grasp the meaning. If one forms views by following words, how is that different from tīrthikas? Because one who is skilled in the meaning is not misled by external doctrines oneself nor leads others astray, such a person is a venerable one of wide learning. Therefore, those who study the Mahāyāna must draw near to venerable ones; otherwise, not being skilled in the meaning, they will fall into speech. Hence he admonishes and encourages once again.
