4.43

"Therefore, Mahāmati, one should cultivate expedient means regarding the real meaning. The real meaning is subtle and quiescent, and is the cause of nirvāṇa. Speech unites with vikalpa; vikalpa gathers saṃsāra. Mahāmati, the real meaning is obtained from one of wide learning. Mahāmati, 'one of wide learning' means one who is skilled in the meaning, not one who is skilled in speech. One who is skilled in the meaning does not follow the sūtras and treatises of any tīrthika; they themselves do not follow them, nor do they cause others to follow them. This is called a venerable one of wide learning. Therefore, one who seeks the meaning should draw near to one of wide learning, that is, one who is skilled in the meaning. One should stay far away from what is contrary to this, clinging to speech."
