The Buddha told Mahāmati: "My speaking of non-arising and non-cessation is not the same as the tīrthikas' non-arising and non-cessation. Why is this? Those tīrthikas have svabhāva as existing, obtaining the characteristics of non-arising and non-changing; I do not fall into the categories of existence and nonexistence in this way. Mahāmati, I am free from the categories of existence and nonexistence, free from arising and cessation, neither having svabhāva nor lacking svabhāva—just as various illusions and dreams appear, therefore it is not non-existence. How is it without svabhāva? It refers to form lacking the apprehension of characteristics with svabhāva, because of appearing and not appearing, because of apprehending and not apprehending. For this reason, all svabhāvas lack svabhāva and are not non-existent; merely awakening to cittadṛśyamātra, vikalpa does not arise, one is secure and joyful, and worldly affairs are forever stilled."
