Eighth, concerning the textual lineages and transmissions: First, to explain the textual lineages: according to what has been seen and heard, there are three versions. First, the large version, consisting of one hundred thousand verses, as stated in the Record of the Three Jewels under the Kaihuang Era. In the mountains of the kingdom of Cakoka south of Khotan, there are ten large sūtras, including the Laṅkāvatāra, each having one hundred thousand verses. Second, the intermediate version, consisting of thirty-six thousand verses. As stated in the various Sanskrit manuscripts translated here, all say thirty-six thousand verses, in which a certain chapter completely answers the hundred and eight questions. For instance, the Tripiṭaka Master Mitraśānta from Tokhara personally received and held this version in India, and further said that in the western countries there is currently a commentary composed by Bodhisattva Nāgārjuna explaining this entire work. Third, the short version, consisting of slightly over one thousand verses, named Laṅkāhṛdaya, which means the Heart of the Laṅkāvatāra, which is this very version. The ancient rendering as dry-chestnut (ganlita) heart is erroneous. As for the four-fascicle version, people therein further abridged it.
