問：準餘經應題序品，何不爾耶？答：若望為經由致，理是序品。但以品內事別或題異號，如《華嚴》、《妙嚴》等。何故四卷都名佛語心品者，準下文，此經一部俱是楞伽心也。佛語者，準梵語正翻名為佛教。於佛教楞伽中，此為中心要妙之說，非是緣慮等心，如般若心等。此是滿部之都名，非別品目。

Question: In accord with other sūtras, this should be titled Introductory Chapter; why is it not so? Answer: Viewed in terms of being the occasion for the sūtra, in principle it is an introductory chapter. However, because the matters within the chapter are distinct, it may be titled with a different name, as in the Avataṃsaka Sūtra's [Chapter on] Wondrous Adornments and the like. Why is the four-fascicle version entirely titled Chapter on the Heart of the Buddha's Words? In accord with the text below, this entire sūtra is the heart of the Laṅkāvatāra. Buddha's words, according to the correct Sanskrit translation, is named Buddha's teaching. Within the Buddha's teaching of the Laṅkāvatāra, this is the essential and wondrous exposition at the core—it is not the mind of perceptual thinking and the like, as in the Heart of Prajñā and so forth. This is the overarching title for the entire text, not a specific chapter title.
