Regarding these two kinds of grasping at a self: some sentient beings universally grasp the pudgala as a self, while other sentient beings distinctly grasp form, sensation, conception, volitional formations, and consciousness as a self. Therefore the Yogācāra[-bhūmi] states: 'Pudgala-nairātmya means that apart from all conditioned formations arising from conditions, no separate real self can be apprehended. Dharma-nairātmya means that the very formations arising from conditions are not in their nature a real self, because they are impermanent.' For this reason the sūtra says: 'You should observe well.' Above, the general explanation is briefly concluded; below, the text will explain them extensively and distinctly.
