This means that the bodhisattva knows that regarding the dependently originated dharmas of the skandhas, dhātus, and āyatanas, if grasped as real, they are parikalpitasvabhāva, fundamentally non-existent. Hence the Ratnakūṭa Sūtra says: 'Comprehending that form is unstable like a cluster of foam, reflecting that sensations are like floating bubbles, that conception moves like a mirage in the heat, one should observe volitional formations like a plantain tree; like a skilled illusionist and dancer in the world who instantly manifests all forms, know that consciousness and its functions are also like this; the wise have no wish for any of these.' This refutes ordinary people's grasping at the existence of the five skandhas. The Mahāprajñāpāramitā says: 'A mass of suffering foam is the characteristic of the skandhas; the Tathāgata awakens to them as markless.'
