Fascicle two of the Guhyaka-vajradhara Sūtra states: 'The Buddha's voice has eight declensions: namely, agent, patient, instrument, purposive, ablative, genitive, locative, and vocative. Each of these eight declensions of voice possesses eight virtues: namely, harmonious voice, soft voice, clear and distinct voice, easy-to-understand voice, infallible voice, voice not faint or shrill, vast voice, and profound voice. Eight times eight make sixty-four kinds. Not only Śākyamuni Buddha, but all Buddhas are like this.' Kalaviṅka is the name of a bird whose voice is clear and elegant, surpassing other birds; hence it is cited as an analogy.
