First, in explaining the names, the common name comes first, followed by the specific designations. Regarding the common name 'pāramitā', the Vijñaptimātratāsiddhi says: 'Only when gathered in by the seven excellences can a pāramitā be established: 1. Excellence of abiding, meaning one must abide in the bodhisattva lineage; 2. Excellence of basis, meaning one must rely on the great bodhicitta; 3. Excellence of aspiration, meaning one must have loving compassion for all sentient beings; 4. Excellence of enterprise, meaning one must fully carry out all enterprises; 5. Excellence of skillful means, meaning one must be embraced by non-conceptual wisdom; 6. Excellence of dedication, meaning one must dedicate toward unexcelled awakening; 7. Excellence of purity, meaning one must not be admixed with the two hindrances, that is, having no regret across the three times.' If any of these seven is lacking, it is not reaching the other shore; therefore, each of these six perfections is distinguished by four propositions. As for their specific names: relinquishing oneself to give to others is called generosity (dāna); guarding against wrongdoing and halting evil is called moral discipline (śīla); withstanding various dharmas without being able to forget them is called patience (kṣānti)—this is spoken in terms of patience toward sentient beings; further, patience means assent (kṣānti), and patience is wisdom, because it assents to both phenomena and principle equally. Refining the mind in the Dharma is called diligence (vīrya); an earnest mind striving to achieve is called energetic advance. The Sanskrit sound is dhyāna, translated here as quiet meditation. The Sanskrit sound is prajñā, translated here as wisdom.
