10.28

Among the eight consciousnesses, the first five consciousnesses can give rise to the first three, which are also common to discrimination and innateness. Because they are guided by the three causes in the mental consciousness—false teachers, false teachings, and improper attention—they can have arising through discrimination. The sixth mental consciousness fully possesses all ten kinds: four are solely of discrimination, and six are common to discrimination and innateness. The seventh, manas, has only four innate ones: namely, self-delusion, self-view, self-pride, and self-love, because this consciousness is of the nature of defiled indeterminate. The eighth consciousness does not give rise to any of the ten at all (it merely contains their seeds), because only this [eighth consciousness] is of the nature of undefiled indeterminate.
