The multitude of bodhisattvas thought in their minds that the five dharmas, three self-natures, eight consciousnesses, and two selflessnesses are all affairs of the Dharma-gates by which noble ones save sentient beings. Since the Tathāgata had already spoken of the eight consciousnesses above, he should also speak for us on the basis for the distinctions of the hundred and eight statements, the affairs of the noble wisdom of the five dharmas, and the Dharma-gate of the three self-natures. Because the assembly had this thought, Mahāmati, relying on the supernatural power of all Buddhas, raised this question. 'The affairs of noble wisdom' refers to the five dharmas.
