Through the expedient means of their fundamental vows, bodhisattvas wish to sever the saṃsāra of all sentient beings and cause them to attain nirvāṇa: "If even a single sentient being has not realized and entered it, I shall never enter it after all." As for the icchantika, because they slander the Bodhisattva-piṭaka, they do not attain nirvāṇa. The bodhisattva knows that saṃsāra is itself nirvāṇa and likewise attains no further nirvāṇa; because their not attaining nirvāṇa is nominally the same, it is said that they also abide in the destiny of the icchantika. This is the characteristic of the lineage lacking nirvāṇa.
