This means that the srotaāpanna does not grasp at precepts for taking rebirth in the future; observing that wherever there is rebirth there are sufferings, they do not seek the pleasures of a rebirth destination. As for those who grasp: all foolish ordinary beings seek the pleasures of the five desires within the three realms of existence, practicing asceticism and maintaining precepts with diligence, wishing to be born there. Such was Nanda maintaining precepts for the sake of female form, which is an example of this class. The srotaāpanna does not grasp at the pleasures of the five desires in a future rebirth destination, but only seeks the non-conceptual Dharma of the supreme, undefiled truth of the four noble truths that they have realized, and by skillful means receives and maintains the practice of the correct precepts. This is called the mark of severing the grasping at precepts and vows.
