This means that since lust, anger, and delusion are neither inside nor outside, they cannot be found; because they originally have no essential nature, there is nothing to grasp. When the noble ones of the three vehicles know that they are false and unreal, this itself is liberation by intrinsic nature; it is not that one only attains liberation by destroying lust, anger, and delusion. If one attained liberation through destruction, then it would be a conditioned phenomenon and could not last. 'That which binds' refers to afflictions. 'The cause of bondage' refers to sentient beings. Because the Buddha knows that afflictions and sentient beings lack reality, there is no person who cuts off afflictions and attains liberation.
