Wishing to cause bodhisattvas to realize that the individual and shared characteristics of the aggregates, elements, and sense-fields are unreal and false, to skillfully counteract false discrimination in the successive order of the stages, and not to fall into the evil views and crooked paths of the non-Buddhists, [the Buddha] spoke in this manner. Yet those phenomena—existence, non-existence, arising, and ceasing—are truly unapprehensible; foolish persons do not know this, which is why all buddhas speak in this way through expedient means.
