Upon awakening, there is no water, and the boat and raft are not real; while dreaming, the river is seen, and the boat and raft are not false. This illustrates that having attained the awakening of the eighth stage, originally there is no saṃsāra, hence the merits of the factors of bodhi are not real; in the seventh stage, not yet awakened and with cittamatra not yet extinguished, the merits of the factors of bodhi are not false. It is merely that the seeing, perceiving, hearing, and knowing since beginningless time, the uninterrupted perfuming of past experiences, cause the false imagination of the mind, thought, and mental consciousness to manifest in the dream. As for the phrase 'free from thoughts of existence and non-existence,' checking the other two translations, it should read 'falling into thoughts of existence and non-existence.'
