This states that bad habituations perfuming the mind manifest various marks. It also says: “Ignorance perfuming the mind manifests various sentient beings.” Thus one knows that sentient beings and the insentient vessel-world all exist due to the perfuming of ignorance. Therefore Zhijue said: “From the one, perfect clarity, sense-faculties and sense-objects are analyzed out; the internal four great elements are gathered as the body, and the external four great elements are divided as the objective realm.” If apart from the condition of perfuming, there is definitely no phenomenon that can be obtained.

Speaking of perfuming, there are generally two kinds: first, habituated perfuming, meaning perfuming the mental substance into defiled and pure consciousnesses and so forth; second, supportive perfuming, meaning the active mind, objects, and various afflictions mutually supporting each other and so forth. Therefore, the *Treatise on the Awakening of Faith* states: “Because of the meaning of the perfuming of four kinds of phenomena, defiled phenomena and pure phenomena arise without interruption. What are the four? First, the pure phenomenon, named tathatā; second, the cause of all defilements, named ignorance; third, the false mind, named karmic consciousness (karmavijñāna); fourth, false objects, namely the six dusts. The meaning of perfuming is like worldly clothing: originally neither fragrant nor foul, yet perfumed according to the substance, it comes to have that scent. This is also like that. The pure phenomenon of tathatā actually has no defilement, but because it is perfumed by ignorance, it has defiled marks; the defiled phenomenon of ignorance actually has no pure karma, but because it is perfumed by tathatā, it has pure function.”
