"Śramaṇa" is Sanskrit, fully rendered as śramaṇa, two syllables having previously been omitted. Here it is translated as "diligent cessation," meaning one who can diligently cultivate all virtues and diligently cease all evils. It is also called "cessation of evil," taking the meaning of putting an end to it. This means that taking leave of one's relatives, leaving one's household, ceasing all evils, and diligently pursuing all goods constitutes a person of the Way; therefore, one is called a śramaṇa.
