1.77

惡人罵止，佛問曰：「如子施禮於人，彼若不納，即子所施禮，其理如何？」愚人對曰：「我自持歸。」佛復告曰：「汝今罵我，我亦不納，子自持歸，禍及汝身。」

When the evil man stopped reviling, the Buddha asked him: 'If you offer a gift of courtesy to someone and they do not accept it, according to principle, what happens to the gift you offered?' The foolish person replied: 'I take it back myself.' The Buddha again told him: 'Now you revile me, and I do not accept it either; you take it back yourself, and the calamity falls upon your own person.'
