"Expansive" (fang, method/norm) receives its name with respect to the Dharma, taking norm and maintenance as its meaning: guiding to produce understanding in beings, and maintaining its own nature. "Maintaining its own nature" means that all sentient beings possess original enlightenment; although they wander in the six destinies and assume various bodies, this enlightened nature is never lost or extinguished. "Producing understanding" means that when sentient beings awaken and enter into [buddha-]knowledge and vision, although they rely on the instruction of good friends, their cognitive understanding arises from the enlightened nature, just as moisture from water and soil causes the sprouts of grain and the like to grow. The sprout arises from the seed, not from the water and soil. Thus the text states: "Perfect enlightenment flows out as bodhi, nirvāṇa, and the pāramitās, teaching and instructing bodhisattvas."
