"Perfect Enlightenment" points directly to the essence of the Dharma. If one does not directly indicate the essence itself, one would not know what dharma the previous discussion called great or what dharma it called broad. "Perfect" means complete, fully equipped, and all-pervading, outside of which there is no other dharma. "Enlightenment" means empty, luminous, and spiritually radiant, free from conceptual discrimination and thought. Thus the *Treatise [on the Awakening of Faith]* states: "The meaning of enlightenment is that the essence of the mind is free from thought. That which is free from the mark of thought is equal to the realm of empty space; this is the equal dharmakāya of the Tathāgata, and relying on this dharmakāya it is named original enlightenment." Explanation: this is a passage explaining original enlightenment within the aspect of arising and ceasing of the tathāgatagarbha mind. Therefore we know that this enlightenment is neither separated from ordinary beings nor confined to sages, neither separated from objects nor confined to mind. Mind and objects, ordinary beings and sages, are fundamentally empty; there is only spiritual enlightenment, hence it is called "perfect." Below, the text states: "Nirvāṇa is yesterday's dream, the world is a flower in the sky, and sentient beings have originally accomplished the Buddha Way." It also says: "Because everything is enlightenment." And again: "When illusion ceases, enlightenment is perfect."
