修多羅者，此云契經，契謂契理、契機；經謂貫穿攝化。謂貫穿所應知義，攝持所化生故。

"Sūtra" (xiu-duo-luo) is translated here as "tallying scripture": "tallying" means tallying with principle and tallying with capacity; "scripture" means stringing together and gathering to transform. That is to say, it strings together the meanings that should be known and gathers and sustains the beings who are to be transformed.
