Now, the first. The sūtra text repeatedly says 'pure' because through the preceding two contemplation gates of emptiness, emotional grasping is eliminated and understanding is revealed, and then by sweeping away traces and extinguishing reflections, it coincides with the arising of practice and severance of understanding; hence all are purified into true emptiness. Therefore the Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa says: 'Ultimate emptiness is precisely ultimate purity; both purity and emptiness have the meaning of severing marks.' If spoken of in terms of the mind, it is as the Vimalakīrtinirdeśa-sūtra says, 'Deluded thinking is defilement, non-deluded thinking is purity,' and so forth; hence it is called 'pure.' Within the text there are seven sections: first, the internal sense faculties and consciousnesses of the body.
