with rapid consummation of contemplative practice, is the ultimate purpose (qu). Furthermore, taking the preceding ultimate purpose as the central principle, bringing afflictions and karma to cessation so as to sever saṃsāra forever, and giving rise to great spiritual functionality with tranquil ease and self-mastery, is the ultimate purpose. Distinctively, there are five pairs: First, the pair of teaching and meaning: the verbal teaching is the central principle, and the intended meaning is the ultimate purpose. Second, the pair of principle and phenomenon: presenting phenomena is the central principle, and revealing principle is the ultimate purpose. Third, the pair of object and practice: the objective realm of principle is the central principle, and contemplative practice is the ultimate purpose. Fourth, the pair of practice and quiescence: contemplative practice is the central principle, and transcending contemplation is the ultimate purpose. Fifth, the pair of quiescence and function: the quiescence of mind that has transcended contemplation is the central principle, and giving rise to great spiritual functionality is the ultimate purpose. These five also arise progressively from the former to the latter, succeeding one another by turns.
